Reona van Rooyen won this A3 pencil portrait of her beautiful Thoroughbred gelding, Star Alliance, as the prize for the raffle for the South African Lipizzaners. I donated the prize in an effort to help the not for profit organization during the terrible COVID 19 induced lock down period in which they were not permitted to run any of the shows that are necessary for their survival.

Reona and I went through lots of photos, and we decided on a lovely portrait that had all his tack on. I removed it and the plait from his forelock too using other photos and the equine model himself – as he lives on the same property as I do. 48 hours in the making, I used Derwent Graphite pencils on an A3 off white sketch pad with a highlight or 2 in white chalk stick.
